Despite a century of remarkable labor-saving automation, the fraction of U.S. adults who work at a job has risen almost continuously for the past 125 years. This poses a paradox: our machines increasingly do our work for us: why doesn’t that make our labor redundant and our skills obsolete?

David Autor

David Autor is the Ford Professor of Economics and Associate Head of the MIT Department of Economics. Alongside his MIT affiliation, David is the Faculty Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, am elected office of the American Economic Association and the Society of Labor Economists amongst many other positions. Through his many differing roles, David’s work has focused on assessing the labor market and consequences of technological change and globalization.
